for the last few weeks i'v been working on my web design in flash. have to say - not a fan of computers me, but i'm actually starting to enjoy it now. I'v gone for the minimalist look (as have most ppl) but was wanting to zhoosh it up a bit with a fancy pre-loader and had envisaged a kind of net or something forming from a load of lines that would creep onto a white background. wasn't sure how i could do this but by chance i found this animated vid on the barbican's website (for their 'in praise of the shadows' exhibition), which is almost a perfect example of what i was looking for! ffaaaaabulous darling...

Typographic Tautology

we worked in pairs for this project. i had the lovely ed rivers working with me :] and after a lot of research we ended up deconstructing an aristotle quote (below).

the most significance we found with this tongue-twister, was its allusive message & unnecessary repetition of meaning using different words that effectively mean the same thing. we aimed to illustrate this confusion by overlaying the two halves of the quotation, which creates a kind of typographical illusion. letterforms can both be found in the negative and positive shapes which reinforces the message of the quotation itself; how do we define truth?

"To say of what is that is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is that it is not, is true." Aristotle.

…& stirring imagery from larry sultan reminds me of alexey titarenko's work titled 'city of shadows'.

just coz they're nice...
i dont know why, but i felt compelled to post these two spreads up that i found whilst doing my recurrent blog-stalking. (above taken from zut-alor sinc [either the world's most clever or irritating website], & below by barney bubbles, featured in creative review).

'Zealous'

this was from a one day typographic workshop we did at the start of year one where we were asked to transcribe a chosen word into something 3D using a single sheet of paper (not asking for much then). with the word 'zealous', i was lead by its phonetics and tried to recreate the sharp sting of the 'z' followed by a fluid consonant-vowel sandwich lol.

there are way too many editorials out there that i love, so i'v just given a few lush ones i'm rather fond of :]...

steven maisel's theatrical editorial titled 'wild warriors' from vogue-italia's november07 issue. currently addicted to his blog, he's managed to capture some funky sh*t in his time!

beautiful klimt inspired editorial shoot 'the bohemian way' by emma summerton

emma pick's latest work for seventh man magazine draws from michelangelo antonioni's 1970 film, 'zabriskie point'. its disarrangement of garments features the discourse of protest with projections from the film.
